Here are a few of the main things we will be working on this quarter:
October:
Theme: "Be a Bulldog, Not a Bullydog"-we will talking about ways we can avoid and prevent bullying at school. We will read different books and completing different bullying themed activities. Our school is implementing the Olweus Bullying Program again this year, and we are enjoying our discussins and role plays during our weekly bullying meetings.
Reading: Students will be practicing their independent reading skills in preparation for 4th grade. We are reviewing different reading skills and strategies, with a focus on cause and effect and making inferences. In guided reading groups, we are really digging into some Common Core reading strategies and answering text dependent questions from more complex non-fiction texts. The students are loving using their highlighters to find new words and to look for the answers! We will have an increased focus on non-fiction text for the remainder of the year, and will be practicing using these texts to enhance our writing.
Math: We still have quite a few topics to cover in math! We are starting with fractions and will move on to cover time, measurement, and basic multiplication. We will continue to review all of the other areas we have already covered, but especially addition, subtraction, and money.
Spelling: Our weekly spelling lists coincide with our Journeys stories each week. Students have a practice packet to complete weekly in order to prepare for our test that is due on Fridays.
Language Arts: We will be focusing on using our Language Arts skills and knowledge of parts of speech to do a lot of writing throughout the remainder of the school year. We have already covered all of the basic parts of speech and will be identifying them in text.
Science- The end of the year is always jam-packed with science! We will be discussing plants, recycling, the water cycle, and animal habitats! We will also be doing some awesome projects to go along with these topics.
